Monday, Dec. 3rd

You need to have your Christmas saying up on in the DMS lab if you haven't had a chance to put it up and were absent on Friday. Please have your scavenger hunt graffiti / sign type converted into a stencil spelling out your design mantra word for Monday. Please bring something to spray paint on and make the stencil to fit your object. I'll bring my stock of spray paint but if you would like something special like glitter spray paint, fabric spray paint or cameo you are on your own for supply. Have some fun with this and make it something that you are going to want to keep around. On the more serious side of things...please have your chapel brochure ready to start. You need to have five pages of research, visual brief and well on your way to the first draft by the end of class on Monday. We are going to be quick with this spray paint business so that you can have as much time as possible in the lab. Only more work day after this to produce your final. On Monday we will also talk about the items needed for this semester's portfolio update.

For AIGA on Monday night, please bring a white elephant gift to pass around. This can be a bad design gift or just a regular white elephant gift. Have some fun with it. We will be having ice cream and all the fixings in the lab at our regular meeting time of 5 pm. If you would like to bring a dessert you are more then welcome. My mom always said to eat dessert before dinner so we are holding to the needed sugar rush for the final push. I was going to have this at the Posey house but I figured since you all are probably slammed the week before finals it would be easier for you all to come if you stayed on campus.

Dec. 1st

Bring your finalized 11x17 poster printed and to class on Friday. Must be up for critique at the beginning of class. Please start your job folder for the final project and research.

Also please buzz over to see Kayla Ellingsworth's opening tonight, Thursday at 6:30 pm in the student gallery. It is worth a look to see how a graphic designer handles the gallery space:)

Monday Critique

Hi everyone,

Here is the specifications for critique on Monday when we get back from break.

JOB FOLDER (make sure everything labeled)
Right Side
1. 5 pages of research (on magazine & or topic)
2. Visual brief
3. Old copy of magazine (article earmarked or post it)
4. Design Summary (normal format)

Left Side
1. 5 pages of thumbnails (spread format - minimum include more if you have them)
2. Large thumbnail rough (cut out copy on your grid)
3. 2 roughs of your cover and your spreads
4. Final / The final must be saddle stitched. Cover on the front of the booklet. Now remember when printing out a booklet must be increments of four to work...please design with this in mind. The minimum spreads that you can do is two for your article but the booklet might demand that you design for three to look good. Trying to make sure that the final product of this is worthy to be in your portfolio for a long time so try and not have any blank pages if you can help it. If you would like to account for the back cover please put a barcode back there. If you are not designing for the backcover the barcode for the magazine must be on the front design. I would recommend to stick with a 11x17 flat size (8.5x11 folded for ease of format).

THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR
Does your voice of your type match the voice the story?
Does your copy read well? / well choosen / well leaded copy
Do you have widows or orphans or odd spacing - will be looking and grading down for all of the above.
Make sure that you have breathing space / gutters can be your best friend to help loosen up the type.
Do you have a wide enough margin / accounting for the creep?
How does your illustration / photos fit the feel of the story?
Draw us in with your cover and pay special attention to the masthead logotype that you are creating. Must fit the feel that you are portraying with the whole magazine.

Please dress up for critique. We will have one final that will pass around class and you will discuss. You can then put that copy into the job folder as your final.

Have a wonderful thanksgiving break!

Screenprinting Monday

Hi guys,

Good job today and not too much mess:) Please have all your stencils cut for Monday so it will just be printing. If you want to print on a inkjet print make sure that you use the card stock that we were printing on instead of the regular lab paper. This is a great time to do prints for the poster sale if you are interested in screen printed prints.

You will be required to do at least one two color process print. Think one like the video clip that you saw on the last post. This must be pulled on paper and finished by Monday afternoon. You also have the option to print on fabric if you would like on Monday as well. I will have a batting board set up so you can use pins or you can do the cardboard option like Megan did on Friday. Either one will work fine. Again the required piece of this puzzle that will be put up the classroom is the two color process print. This will have to be done by the end of class on Monday so budget your time wisely. See you then and have a great weekend!

AIGA we will be printing t-shirts in A72 on Monday at 5 pm so don't forget to bring one to do the print on. Katie is going to be getting me the graphic this weekend so if someone is willing to cut it out on Monday before the meeting please let me know.

DON'T FORGET WE WILL BE MEETING IN A72 FOR CLASS AND AIGA MEETING. DON'T GO TO THE DMS LAB.

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Screenprinting Friday

We will meet in A72 / large art room next to the wellness center tomorrow. Please bring the following items to class
-blue painters tape
-screen
- please bring duct tape to class (we will be suring up your screens for easier use in the future / creating a well)
-squeege
-clothes that you can get dirty and wet
-contact paper stencil (please go to the dollar store and pick up a roll of contact paper. you will cut the contact paper to the size of the screen. / if you want to pick up a big roll and split the costs.
-select an image that you enjoy (you can make this so it is multi-colored you will need more than one stencil)
-Then tape your image on top of the contact paper / make sure centered and start cutting. When you cut make sure that you are cutting out the dark tones on one stencil and if you want another color or a medium tone make sure that you are only cutting out those colors. This can work just like 4 color process if you want it to. When making cuts make sure that all the white areas have connection points or your stencil becomes a much bigger area than you would like.

Please come to class with your stencil cut. This will save us time in the studio instead of waiting for cutting mats to free up we can just get started printed. If nervous about how to do this feel free to wait but realize this cuts down on your studio time and we won't be able to have access to this on a regular basis so use your time wisely.

This will give you an idea of what we are doing tomorrow.

Monday, Sept. 24th

Hi guys,

Have you movie quote printed and ready to hang on the wall. 11x17 full color, full bleed. You do get credit for these in class assignments so that these off set your bigger grades this semester instead of it being all about the big projects like it has been in the past so make sure that you are keeping up.

UU Film Fest
Union Student Film Festival needs to be the logotype. Again logotype can be the typeface or embellished with images inside the type. Keep working on your logotype and be sure to be working out the thumbnails and roughs as well.

Poster (11x17) needs to have April 5 - 6th / Alumni Showcase and April 8 - 9 / Film Festival. 10th anniversary needs to be featured on the poster somewhere along with the logo and film fest website.

Have a safe trip to Think Tank this weekend and get lots of inspiration. We will do a recap for the rest of us on Monday at AIGA.

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Friday, Sept. 21

Hi guys,

Please start working out your logotype ideas and get started on research for your UU Film Fest branding. Those going to Think Tank make sure that you fill out the online form. See you Friday!

Just something to think about when developing a brand / identity. How important is it to you?

Monday, September 17, 2012

Wednesday class

Hi guys,

Make sure that you read pages 36 to 71 in your book. Have your logotype for your hometown ready to critique in class / digital is fine for this one. See you Wednesday!

Sunday, September 16, 2012

Monday, Sept. 17

Hi guys,

Make sure you study your typography notes - know classifications, typography systems, additional type anatomy and historical figures (just information...no slides).

Have you drop caps printed on 11x17 and hung up in the room by the start of class. We will do a spot critique with these. Make sure that the look of the letter matches the voice of the story.

Don't forget we have AIGA at 5 pm Monday night - rides to Think Tank, internship story and jobs to give out:)

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Critique on Friday

Critique on Friday! Make sure that you dress up and have the cover under glass and the website pages ready to pull up on the screen. Follow the instructions given in class (those not in class make sure you get someone you trust's notes) This part of the assignment for this project so follow them to a T. Don't make me loose my bet:) See you then!

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Wednesday, Sept. 12

Make sure that you are working through your job folder. You will need to have some roughs of website and journal cover to show to class on Wednesday. Final critique on this is Friday so make sure that you are making progress to your deadline. Wednesday will primarily be a work day so make sure you come with all the materials you need to work in class.

Sunday, September 9, 2012

For Monday

For Monday, please continue to develop out your job folder for the JUFF. Don't forget to start brainstorming for your website as well as the cover.

Hopefully, we will see you at my house on Monday night at 6 pm. There will be taco soup and all the fixings. If you guys can bring pops (translation cokes) and or desserts. I am Type and journal research for Friday

For Friday, please have a job folder started for your research and thumbnails for your Journal Cover. Do research on the website design inspiration as you go along and hopefully the journal cover will lead into the other. Journal and website final will be presented to the editorial board on Friday, Sept. 14th. More details to come...job folder start first.

I AM TYPE posters
Set of 8 posters / 11x17. Please use a typographic system per poster / 8 total It is up to you what type of font, color and how the essay will be broken up on the posters. The entire essay needs to spread across the 8 posters. The posters need to look like a set despite all the different systems used and standardized colors and font family will help this. Have all 8 ready to view in one pdf for Friday's class. Here is your essay.

I am type! Of my earliest ancestry neither history nor relics remain. The wedge-shaped symbols impressed in plastic clay by Babylonian builders in the dim past, foreshadowed me; from them, on through the hieroglyph of the ancient Egyptians, down to the beautiful manuscript letters of the medieval scribes, I was in the making. With the golden vision of the ingenious Gutenberg, who first applied the principle of casting me in metal, the profound art of printing with movable types was born to countless thousands. I bring into the light of day the precious stores of knowledge and wisdom long hidden in the grave of ignorance.
I coin for you the enchanting tale, the philosopher's moralizing, and the poet's phantasies; I enable you to exchange the irksome hours that come, at times, to everyone, for sweet and happy hours with books-golden urns filled with all the manna of the past. In books I present to you a portion of the eternal mind caught in its progress through the world, stamped in an instant, and preserved for eternity. Through me, Socrates and Plato, Chaucer and the Bards, become your faithful friends whoever surround and minister to you. I am the leaden army that conquers the world. Cold, rigid, and implacable I may be, yet the first impress of my face brought the divine world. I am type!

Wednesday, Sept. 5th

Hi guys,

Please create a font using an object. All the capital letters must be accounted for on the poster. You can arrange and design the poster in anyway you see fit to correspond to the subject of the typeface. Have some fun and be original with this. Really push the material and see what different forms are created by the use of the material. Please have this printed in color, 11x17 for class on Wednesday. Cut the poster full bleed status and have your font name somewhere included on the poster. Here are a few examples from years past to draw on...

If you can't find the typographer's font for free please find a similar font in style to create their portrait in. The portraits need to be on 8.5x11 printed, B&W. Please center the portrait. Beneath the portrait of the typographer please put their name in the font that you have been using in 13 point. Centered underneath that the name of the font that you have used, the date the font was created in 10 pt italics. Please create a 3 inch margin for the bottom of the piece...this means that you text should not enter this 3 inch zone. Have the portrait printed out and framed behind your clip frame for class on Wednesday. Below are a few examples from previous years to look over. Again...more simple the forms are the better these turn out generally. If you are doing overlap please be careful to let the natural form of the letter show through. If you have any questions about this just drop me a line also pick up your clip frames from outside my office if you haven't yet or need a spare. See you Wednesday and tonight at 4:30 in the lab.
