The cover and back design you can have fun - make it fit to your look of your booklet. All letterforms need be accounted for. Have fun on the double page spreads. Booklets need to be staple bound and ready to view. You need to dress up for critique, but no worries about job folder or putting anything under glass.

PLEASE UPLOAD A PDF OF THIS BOOKLET to issuu account so that we have something to look at on the board rather than just in person.

Monday, Nov. 30

Please finish your stop motion for Monday. Be prepared to work on Juff most of the day. We have some final changes to do to the table of contents, one last article and bios to add. So don't plan on having Monday during class to work on the stop motion like we had thought. Too much to finish up with the JUFF. The editorial board will be here at 2 pm the work individually with you all to make the edits.

Good luck and have a wonderful break!

Thursday, November 19, 2015

Friday, Nov. 20

Your type stop motion will be due on Friday at the end of class. We have a couple more things to layout and compile for the JUFF so be ready to look those over. See you then!

Monday, November 16, 2015

Wednesday, Nov. 18

Please have your typography stop motion ready to look over the stop motion and the typography hand drawn logotypes (3 a person). We will put them together at the beginning of class.

Friday, Nov. 13

We are narrowing this down to just the book cover assignment. No more website or internal chapter. Please have the different looks for the cover - including spine back and flap printed out for class on Friday. No less than two different looks. We will discuss roughs and direction on Friday. Assignment will be due on Monday, Nov. 16. Must have on hard cover book for critique.

Monday, November 9, 2015

Wednesday, Nov. 11

Please have some printed out roughs of full cover - this includes spine, front, back and interior flaps. Concentrate on this. We will discuss options for deadline for project on Wednesday. Won't be Friday just because of the JUFF slowing us down. Will keep working with JUFF to refine copy as we do this so keep both projects in mind as you work. You will not receive a final grade for the JUFF until final project is turned in to the client. All this progress work contributes to your final grade.

Friday, November 6, 2015

Monday, Nov. 9

Please print off your Juff material for class on Friday. Have it all printed off and completed please. We will format together and send off to the editorial team on Monday.

Please have some thumbnails and some progress on your book covers and websites. Visual briefs for covers and websites should be printed. You should have good progress on thumbnails and be starting on your roughs. Should have some documents moving toward roughs by the start of class on Monday.

Wednesday, November 4, 2015

Friday, Nov. 6

Please be working on your JUFF files. Hoping to have it just small format changes on Friday so come with them already set in the indesign file to class. Please get started on thumbnails, visual briefs for your book cover and website. Now…just a reminder book covers include backs and interior flaps. This is a hard cover book that you are designing not a poster. The critique will have a hard cover book stand in with your cover as a model on it.

See ya Friday!

IN CLASS - November 4th

Okay guys, so I'm going to be in critique with Graphics One in the PAC. I will head over to the lab as soon as I'm finished but you all need to use this day as a work day on the JUFF.

Congrats to Amanda for being chosen on the look of the cover and website and Song for being chosen on the interior treatment! Now we have to combine the two looks as a team.

Here are the notes that I have from the editorial board.

Cover - We need to take the title Journal big and then the sub information - check out logo from last years, no abreviation of JUFF on title. Try it in the san serif type and try one in the Baskerville see what works.

Need to change the blue to red - Amanda do what we talked about. Will have a chance to discuss design again with editorial board.

Back needs white version of the logo.

Website - Please make one solid black with photo on top and bottom border. Smaller navigation buttons. Please make the logo that you choose for the cover extend to website. We will get information for them that is current. Please ask Anna to supply you all with that info when you get a chance.

Interior - Song they loved every style you treated the type. Loved the footnotes and body copy. Way to knock block quotes out of the park. Match the headline for Amanda's and the byline treatment to your style. Page numbers loose the circle and keep placement.

Biggest thing today is take google drive info and start laying out. Song you will want to fix the file with the information that you need to update and then share the file with the other team members. They will use the document that you've set up since all the styles are there. Print as you go...important to see stuff on paper to fix mistakes.

I will check in with you are soon as possible after critique. Don't forget to be ready to talk about book cover options today. We will have a work day on this material on Friday as well.

Monday, November 2, 2015

Wednesday, Nov. 4

Please have in mind an idea of a book that you would like to redesign the cover. The cover that it currently has is not as interesting or eludes to the story as it could be. Bring an image of the cover and research to class on Wednesday.

We will get started on the JUFF files on Wednesday. Be ready to start laying out. I will start class with the Graphics One critique in the PAC so you will be charged with started to layout the articles according to the styles at the start of class. I should know as early as tomorrow as to who has been awarded the job. I will head back to class after I finish the Social Cause critique with graphics one and we will start talking about the book project and what we need to finish with the JUFF then. Friday will be a work day on the JUFF as well and more progress on the book cover.

Monday, October 5

Okay so I'm going to move the critique back to Wednesday. No homework over break. I don't feel like you got a fair chance to talk about job folders and how critique works for this since not all of you have been through this process before. Make sure you use the extra time wisely. We will spend time in class on Monday talking about the critique before hand and uploading to issuu an interactive version, but we will be doing a in-class assignment instead of using the time to work on spreads so don't plan an having an additional work day on Monday for the magazine that is Friday (which remember has no class). Make sure that your final document has styles for every required element, pushes the concept with type and illustration or photos.

Please see previous post for all assignment details.

Wednesday, September 9, 2015

Friday, Sept. 11

I AM TYPE posters
Set of 8 posters / 11x17. Please use a typographic system per poster / 8 total It is up to you what type of font, color and how the essay will be broken up on the posters. The entire essay needs to spread across the 8 posters. The posters need to look like a set despite all the different systems used and standardized colors and font family will help this. Have all 8 ready to view in one pdf for Friday's class. Here is your essay.

I am type! Of my earliest ancestry neither history nor relics remain. The wedge-shaped symbols impressed in plastic clay by Babylonian builders in the dim past, foreshadowed me; from them, on through the hieroglyph of the ancient Egyptians, down to the beautiful manuscript letters of the medieval scribes, I was in the making. With the golden vision of the ingenious Gutenberg, who first applied the principle of casting me in metal, the profound art of printing with movable types was born to countless thousands. I bring into the light of day the precious stores of knowledge and wisdom long hidden in the grave of ignorance.
I coin for you the enchanting tale, the philosopher's moralizing, and the poet's phantasies; I enable you to exchange the irksome hours that come, at times, to everyone, for sweet and happy hours with books-golden urns filled with all the manna of the past. In books I present to you a portion of the eternal mind caught in its progress through the world, stamped in an instant, and preserved for eternity. Through me, Socrates and Plato, Chaucer and the Bards, become your faithful friends whoever surround and minister to you. I am the leaden army that conquers the world. Cold, rigid, and implacable I may be, yet the first impress of my face brought the divine world. I am type!

Über List of Typography Terms

Here you go guys. Here is the uber list of type terms to study.

Monday, August 24, 2015

Wednesday, August 26

Please have a brush, water (container), black paint / ink, ruler and pencil for Monday. Also don't forget to study for a type anatomy quiz over the basics covered in class.

If you can't find the typographer's font for free please find a similar font in style to create their portrait in. The portraits need to be on 11x17  printed, B&W. Please center the portrait. Beneath the portrait of the typographer please put their name in the font that you have been using in 13 point. Centered underneath that the name of the font that you have used, the date the font was created in 10 pt italics. Please create a 3 inch margin for the bottom of the piece...this means that you text should not enter this 3 inch zone. Have the portrait printed out for class on Wednesday. Below are a few examples from previous years to look over. Again...more simple the forms are the better these turn out generally. If you are doing overlap please be careful to let the natural form of the letter show through.

Friday, August 21, 2015

Monday, August 24

Please complete three copies of a letter photograph of your choice from this afternoon's adventure. Make a copy of this letter in your sketchbook on three separate pages in three separate mediums. Please mimic the look and texture of the letter but feel free to have some fun with color.
