Hi guys,

In your sketchbooks please draw a capital letter of your first name...example M for Mary inside a matrix using five different modes of sketching.

One drawing using a pen (this can be ballpoint or fancy nib) with ink on paper
One drawing using a stick with ink on paper
One drawing using a object of your choice (surprise us) with ink on paper
One drawing using a stick in dirt / clay (take a photo and paste in sketchbook)

Project 3 & Wednesday, October 6th

Project 03 / Portrait of the History of Type

This project has three components.

Component Number 1
You must select a typographer and a font to work in. Compose a type portrait of this typographer only using the letterforms of one font that he or she composed. Utilize this font for the whole form of the face, look closely at the anatomy of the type and see what compares to the form on the body. Center this piece on an 11x17, please put the name of the typographer in 13 point in the font you have chosen. Center this beneath the portrait. Underneath the typographer's name please put the name of the font used and the date of it's inception in italics and 10 point. This will be due under glass in a 16x20 frame on October 13th.

Component Number 2
You must research and write a 700 word essay on your typographer. Please give me the history of the typographer, the background on the who, what and why they made the typeface. Please include references beyond wikipedia for the text. This should be included at the end of your essay in the layout. Please use footnote numbers to denote what source is being used and MLA citation for the bibliography. This must be laid out in a one book signature format, in a modular grid with no larger than 10 point and no smaller than 8 point for the body copy. This book must have a front and back cover which also hold to your established grid. This will be turned in at the beginning of class on October 13th.

Component Number 3
In class on Wednesday, we will come up with our collective grid for our type timeline. You will need at critique on the 13th to have a cut stencil of your typographer's typeface with the name of the typeface. This will count as your sketchbook grade for this project along with your character. Please bring both to class to count as your sketchbook grade. You will bring these back to class after fall break so that we may tag our wall with the chronology of type.

In Summary this is what will be due on October 13th
11x17 BW portrait of typography
700 word essay on typographer laid out in signature format on modular grid, 8.5x11 (folded 11x17)
Stencil of typeface with the name of the typeface & character typeface for sketchbook grade

For Wednesday, we will practice on sewing signatures. If you would like to start on your grid I will look it over. Also please have a decent start on your type portrait so that you may get a mini critique before you get too far on it. Remember this project will be self motivated and you will not have the opportunity to meet with me again before critique on the Wednesday of the 13th. Friday, will be work day with a sign in sheet and Monday will be an individual work day.

See you then!

Monday, October 4

Hey guys,

Please come to class with your stencils and a can of spray paint. Also be sure to bring your sketchbook. Oh and I also might be running a bit late to class today. I have an eye doctor appointment at 1:30 and I'm hoping to be out of there in time to start class. If I don't get there in time please don't leave - instead please have the name and image of a modern typographer's work pulled up at the start of class. We will be talking about the history of type as well as spray painting it:) See you then!
