Wednesday, November 9, 2016

Friday, Nov. 11

Please go and spend some time in the magazine section of the bookstore. Spend some time leafing through magazines that you are attracted to. Good design aesthetic. Take photos of the spreads that you like. Find a magazine about a topic that you are interested in but the aesthetic of the magazine is poor. Ex. Tea Time / horrible design but you love tea:) / start to ask yourself could I expand the target market by changing the voice of this magazine. Take photos of where the magazine is located in the rack and what is by it. You will use these as reference to know how to design it in comparison to it's competition. Purchase the ugly magazine. You will be copying out one of the main feature stories to redesign the layout and the front cover of the magazine.

See you Friday!

We will cover book binding for an entire fun day when we get back from Fall break so make sure to bring your bone folders then.

Thanks again! So grateful for y'all. Be safe those of you that are heading out and the rest of you see ya on Wednesday.

Friday, Sept. 30

Due on Friday. 11x17. Across 8 posters in design systems. Must be designed in the type system / one system for each poster. Have fun and think about the text and how you are using type to express the quote. Limit yourself to one type family - play with size, scale, weight, italics instead of tons of different type. FW Goudy needs to be at the end of the quote. Worth 100 points for the set.

I am type! Of my earliest ancestry neither history nor relics remain. The wedge-shaped symbols impressed in plastic clay by Babylonian builders in the dim past, foreshadowed me; from them, on through the hieroglyph of the ancient Egyptians, down to the beautiful manuscript letters of the medieval scribes, I was in the making. With the golden vision of the ingenious Gutenberg, who first applied the principle of casting me in metal, the profound art of printing with movable types was born to countless thousands. I bring into the light of day the precious stores of knowledge and wisdom long hidden in the grave of ignorance.
I coin for you the enchanting tale, the philosopher's moralizing, and the poet's phantasies; I enable you to exchange the irksome hours that come, at times, to everyone, for sweet and happy hours with books-golden urns filled with all the manna of the past. In books I present to you a portion of the eternal mind caught in its progress through the world, stamped in an instant, and preserved for eternity. Through me, Socrates and Plato, Chaucer and the Bards, become your faithful friends whoever surround and minister to you. I am the leaden army that conquers the world. Cold, rigid, and implacable I may be, yet the first impress of my face brought the divine world. I am type!

Wednesday, Sept. 28

Please bring your reworked movie quotes. Think about type, voice and packet. How do these fit the voice and the look of the movie? Please reconsider large elements of type for your typographers portrait. Reprint if necessary. Quick critique in class and moving on to next assignment.
